There are seven candidates for San Diego County Sheriff on the June 7 ballot in the race to replace retired Sheriff Bill Gore, who may be most remembered for the high number of deaths that occurred in county jails on his watch. The problem persists. There was another jail death Thursday, the ninth this year, all since Gore left.

The San Diego Union-Tribune Editorial Board sent each candidate a 10-question survey and is publishing responses here from the six who replied, retired sheriff’s Sgt. Charles “Chuck” Battle, police Capt. John “Gundo” Gunderson, chief criminal prosecutor John Hemmerling, Undersheriff Kelly Anne Martinez, retired sheriff’s Commander Dave Myers and peace officer Jonathan Peck. Combat Infantry Capt. Juan Carlos “Charlie” Mercado did not reply to repeated requests. The top two vote-getters will advance to a Nov. 8 runoff election.
